This thing of ours

by Jennifer on November 26, 2008

Almost a year ago, I found myself holding one end of a tug-of-war rope. On the other end were my sister and my best friend, as they tried to pull me across the red line and into the world of blogging.

It wasn’t so much that I was against the idea, I was just kind of doubtful and whiny about it.

“But what’ll I write about?” I begged to know. “Who’s even gonna read it? The two of you, and maybe Louise?”

I didn’t understand this outlet – this community – for what it was, because I couldn’t have known.

Well, I don’t need to tell you that they won.

Now, ten months after my first post, I look back and marvel that I did have something to say, and still do on good days. And I’m still surprised and delighted every time I see your comments roll in. The idea that I write and post about all sorts of things and that you stop by and hang out and even comment – well, it makes things on this end pretty great.

I’ve learned so much from you, and have had such a great time getting to know you through what you write, to step into your life a little bit through the words you leave for me to find. Your words amaze me and make me laugh or cry or ache or think. Even the tears are a sweet pain.

So I’m thankful to have found my way to you, to have made such good friends in this little part of the world. And I  don’t plan to go anywhere. If you’re in, then I’m in, for as long as this ride lasts.

And this thing of ours? (if you watched The Sopranos, you’ll remember Tony using that phrase in the last episode)

It’s pretty great.

Happy Thanksgiving!

(Thank you to Ducky and Madge…you were right.)

Has it only been 10 months for you? I thought you’d probably been around for some time–your writing has such confidence and insight.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family–enjoy your kids tomorrow.

Blogging, for me, anyway, is all about the connections and the community. I LOVE my blogging buddies because they make me think, they make me laugh, the call me on my shit, and the offer the kind of support and kindness that seems to be missing in so much of the “real” world. I’ve never met a blogger in real life who wasn’t EXACTLY what I was expecting, and I consider many of the people who come to my site dear friends.

Thanks for being one of them.

Well, your words and the way you craft them are a gift to everyone who stops by, for sure. And when I started poking around the blogging world (not ten months ago, maybe 5 at best), yours is a blog that made it seem so real. . . and so bloody intimidating 🙂

I’m grateful for the bloggy world too. Hope you have a fulfilling Thanksgiving – enjoy your family time!

And here I thought you were one of the originals. Many of us needed to be talked into it. Some of us in return have dragged others into the blogosphere. That’s a good feeling too, in a pay it forward kind of way. Glad you’re out here. You’re always a fine read.

I’ve been blogging for more than 3 years now. Late last year after some weird internet stalking and hate mail, I buried my archives, changed my format, kept my URL, but lost about 80 percent of my readership. Ouch. Those who have stayed and those who have more recently arrived mean even more to me after all that.

I must say I feel rather similar. I’ve beenblogging for about half your time, and sometimes I wonder what I’m going to blog about next – but someting crops up.

That people should want to read what I say …. makes me truly wonder.

It is a community. I’m been at it a year… a year and a half? Anyway, it is a good discipline, therapeutic certainly – but the very best part is the connection to other people, those glimpses we allow one another into our lives and the support and love we receive from our “community”

I completely agree. 100%. I’ve been blogging since the spring, and it’s already become such an incredible new part of my life-the friends gained, the creative outlet for me…it’s all good stuff! Love your blog-I’ll be back (here from AllMediocre). Adding you to my blogroll 🙂

And I’m very glad it’s been so good for you. You can’t know until you do it, and the connections ARE wonderful.
