About
Jennifer Schmitt
Welcome! This place is my online home, and I’m very glad you stopped by.
I live in Maryland, where I’m a freelance writer. I write about a lot of things – the family I’ve made for myself, the family who made me, moments that stop me in my tracks, and the long drives that reset my compass.
Things for which I have a soft spot: long drives, meteor showers, dive bars, good music, Lyle Lovett, wild violets, wild places, whole days where I never get out of my pajamas, fireflies, historic preservation, my Frye harness boots, Steve Earle, and free speech.
If you’re new here, a good place to start is Best of Thursday Drive.

Beautiful country! You’re lucky!
What a good idea. I relish time alone in the car, just me and my CDs.
You look so much like my friend, Meredith, that I liked you on sight.

Wasn’t me – you’re right, we do live in Arizona.
Thanks for stopping by here!
Jennifer, I like your style. Your prose is striking, and by that I mean clear and bold: you don’t hide your meaning behind flowery words. And yet looking at your selection of quotes, the poems you posted as favorites, and the phrases you weave into your narratives, it’s obvious that you care not only about expressing your ideas clearly but about expressing them attractively. That mixture of caring, clarity, and competence in expression is the gift of a talented writer.
As a reader that is (contrary to your Prologue assumption) on the perimeter of your life, I would like to ask about the “Fears and Events and Prayers” saga: which part is fact, which part fiction?
Also, why have I never heard your sister referred to as “Ducky”? Knowing that would have made high school ever so much more fun…
Oh, and one more thing: in-between the moonrise and the moonset is, well, the moonshine, right? Isn’t that where the real kick is?
FEP is all true, every word of it. It’s her book that has the fiction.
Lucky for me, I hadn’t a nephew in high school. The nickname is only about seven years old, and comes from not being able to say my name (it was the last of several attempts, and we made it stick).
